Once in a Blue Moon
October 24, 2020
It's that time of the year when goblins and ghouls, and even witches and vampires come out to play, but this year's Halloween will be slightly different with the unprecedented events of 2020. At the same time, you'll be able to gaze up at the night sky to see a rare treat. The night sky on Halloween 2020 will be illuminated by the sight of a full blue moon that will be visible to the entire world for the 1st time since World War II. (Farmers' Almanac)
Now, is the moon really blue? No, but it is made of cheese. (J/K) It is called a "blue moon" because it is the second full moon of the month, but for it to happen on Halloween is rare; so the next time it will happen is 2039. Of course, the dark blue tone of the night sky may have an effect on the coloring.
In addition to the blue moon, let's not forget daylight savings time. Everyone will get an extra hour of Halloween fun that night and it's on a Saturday, so enjoy! That's an entire day of costumes, candies and crafts, but you still need to safely celebrate the day with family and/or friends.
If you're worried about stepping out, the internet is full of possible quarantine ideas to celebrate Halloween. One that I've been doing for years before the pandemic is to have a horror movie marathon. A few others that I got from the internet are listed below:
1. Zoom/Google parties
2. Face painting
3. Cocktail creations
4. Bake delicious goodies
5. Create face masks
6. Decorate your home
7. Pumpkin carving
8. Indoor scavenger hunt
9. Virtual escape rooms
As for those looking for a fun and safe outside activities, the Beach & Tennis Club is having a trunk-or-treat on Friday, October 30, 2020 @ 6:00pm - 8:00pm. In order to join the fun, you must contact the club and reserve your ticket(s) by October 25, 2020. Accordingly, if you are concerned that you may have contracted the desease, it would be best to go get tested in order to avoid spreading the virus to others; family and friends.
UPDATE: Effective immediately, The Beach & Tennis Clubhouse will be closed with a tentative re-opening date of November 6, 2020 due to 3 staff members having tested positive for COVID-19. As expected, all events have been cancelled or postponed until further notice.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Julie Carter, General Manager: jcarter@elitehoa.com for additional information.
Despite some of the mishappenings in 2020, Halloween throughout Orange County will continue with haunted houses, trunk-or-treats, hay rides, costume contests, pumpkin patches and more are still happening. It seems some annual events have been cancelled, but there is still plenty to check out, including drive-in movies. All you have to do is Google "Halloween 2020 Events in Orange County" and a list of websites will appear.
Unfortunately, Disney's Halloween Party and Knott's Scary Farm will be closed this year. Let's hope that everything is back to normal in 2021.
Whatever you do, please be safe!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
